How it works
What we check
- Hardness
- Scale on fixtures and spots on dishes and glasses.
- Chlorine
- The taste and smell some people notice in city water.
- Iron
- Orange or brown stains, most common with wells.
- Total dissolved solids
- The overall amount of minerals in your water.
- pH
- How acidic or alkaline it is, which matters for pipes and fixtures.
An example only. Your results depend on your home and water source.
About water on the Gulf Coast
Most homes in Pensacola get their water from ECUA, which pumps it from wells in the Sand-and-Gravel Aquifer and treats it with lime to adjust the pH, phosphoric acid to help protect pipes, and chlorine to disinfect it. ECUA publishes its results every year in its water quality report. Homes on private wells aren’t tested by a utility at all, so a test is the simplest way to know what’s coming out of your tap.
